The Fascinating Liquor Tradition

Yes, you read that right. Kaal Bhairav Temple is the ONLY temple in the world where liquor (alcohol) is offered to the deity and given back as prasad to devotees.

This isn't some modern practice — it's been happening for thousands of years and is rooted in ancient scriptures.

How It Works:

  1. 1

    Devotees Buy Liquor

From licensed shops near the temple. Usually local brands like XXX Rum, desi daru, or any alcohol.

  2. 2

    Pour Into a Bowl

Priests provide a metal bowl (katori). You pour the liquor into it.

  3. 3

    Offer to Deity

The bowl is placed near the idol's mouth. Within seconds, the liquor DISAPPEARS!

  4. 4

    Receive Prasad

You get the blessed liquor back. Many devotees drink it as prasad (optional).

Scientific Explanation: There's a scientific theory that the idol has porous stone that absorbs liquids. But believers say it's divine intervention — after all, water doesn't disappear as fast as alcohol does!

Why is Liquor Offered?

According to ancient texts, Kaal Bhairav is the fierce (raudra) form of Lord Shiva, responsible for protecting the holy city of Kashi (Varanasi) and Ujjain.

The Story: Once, Bhairav beheaded one of the heads of Lord Brahma (for showing arrogance). As a punishment, Brahma's skull stuck to his hand. To free himself, Bhairav had to visit holy places and beg for food.

In Ujjain, locals offered him liquor and meat (unconventional offerings) out of fear and devotion to this fierce deity. The tradition continues today.

Note: Offering liquor is NOT mandatory. You can offer flowers, coconut, or sweets instead. But the liquor ritual is what makes this temple world-famous.
